Strategic Planning Sessions and How They Benefit Your Team

Wednesday 27th June saw the Property Republic Team map out and plan the future of our brand in an intensive planning session.

With butcher’s paper, post-its, notepads and thinking caps at the ready, we spent the entire day establishing the foundations on which we want the Property Republic brand to grow.

We additionally equipped ourselves with the necessary strategies to achieve our future goals. We began the day discussing the purpose of our planning session, to ensure we all had a clear and shared understanding of the desired outcome of the day. Once this was established, we analysed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the business, with each member of the team contributing proactively to complete the SWOT analysis. From there, we moved on to determining the main values of our brand, which was a highly collaborative process.

We each wrote a series of values onto separate sticky notes and placed them onto a whiteboard. As a team, we then decided which ones were most valuable and relevant to our brand and which ones could be omitted. With our core values firmly established, we moved on to developing the vision of our brand and formulated an array of processes we must implement to realise this vision. As we successfully completed each task, we made sure to tick it off our checklist, which assisted us in staying on track.

Our facilitator and director, Judi Carr, ensured the meeting was continuously engaging, interesting and cooperative through the inclusion of music, varied activities and by nurturing an inclusive environment. Ultimately, the day of planning achieved the following outcomes:

  1. Established a common goal for our entire team to work towards

  2. Identified shortcomings and ways to overcome or eliminate them

  3. Identified opportunities and strategies to harness them

  4. Set in place processes to achieve our long-term goals

  5. Established pillars to consistently tie our strategies back to

What are the benefits?

Essentially, there an array of benefits that can come from a planning day or session with your team. The outcomes depend on the purpose of the meeting, the dynamic between team members and how effectively you can ensure productivity throughout the session. Keeping a checklist that you can tick off as you progress through your activities is a great way to ensure you stay on track. If a planning session is executed efficiently and effectively, your team has the potential to achieve cohesion, brand vision, clear direction and a definitive plan to achieving your brand’s primary goals. Perhaps the most beneficial outcome of a comprehensive planning session is the establishment of a well-defined and shared goal that each team member is working towards.

We recommend incorporating the following initiatives to ensure you get the best out of your team’s planning day: 

Get out of the office

Hosting the session in a venue outside of the office is a great way to encourage creativity and assist your team in stepping and thinking ‘outside’ of the business.

Encourage collaboration

Planning days or sessions are most effective when each member of the team collaborates equally and proactively. The best way to ensure this, is to foster an inclusive and supportive environment, where all contributions are respected, acknowledged and appreciated.

Be creative

Adding creativity to the meeting is important for maintaining interest, avoiding monotony and encourage ‘out of the box’ thinking. Including a variety of group and individual based activities, playing music for concentration and during autonomous tasks and using multi-coloured paper and pens are great ways to get your team’s creative juices flowing.

Provide food

Providing brain food for your team is extremely important – nobody can think effectively on an empty stomach. It’s also wise to give your team at least one, if not multiple, breaks to avoid slumps in energy and disengagement.
